New steel can be made from recycled steel in an electric arc furnace

New steel can be made from recycled steel using electric arc furnaces (EAFs). In an EAF, electricity is conducted through large graphite electrodes, which are positioned to create an arc with the metal scrap or raw material placed inside the furnace. The intense heat generated by the electric arc—reaching temperatures up to 3,000°C—melts the metal, allowing impurities to be removed and alloying elements to be added. 1
