Black hydrogen is produced using coal

Black hydrogen, sometimes called brown hydrogen, is produced using coal through a process known as coal gasification. This method involves reacting coal with oxygen and steam under high temperatures to produce a mixture of gasses, primarily hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. The hydrogen can then be separated and purified for future use.1

Coal gasification for hydrogen production is one of the oldest methods of generating hydrogen but is associated with significant carbon dioxide emissions. Despite the disastrous climate impacts, black hydrogen remains a significant part of the global hydrogen production landscape, particularly in regions with abundant coal reserves such as India.2
