Global shipping is responsible for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions
The shipping industry is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the shipping industry accounts for approximately 2-3% of global GHG emissions.1 In 2018, the IMO estimated that international shipping alone emitted around 1,056 million metric tons of CO2, representing about 2.89% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions that year.2
